- Liverpool dominated their 4-2 victory over Newcastle with an impressive performance, but despite breaking an all-time expected goals (xG) record, they should have scored more. Anfield was electric as the Reds started the New Year with a bang, firing 34 shots on goal, with 18 in the first half alone – the most by any team this Premier League season. However, the first half ended 0-0, and all six goals came in the second half. Liverpool were the deserved winners, with Mohamed Salah scoring twice, and Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo also netting. The Reds set a new Premier League record with an xG tally of 7.27, but the final scoreline should have been 7-1. Despite the missed opportunities, Liverpool’s performance was dominant, and they recorded 129 shots on goal in their last five games, averaging 25.8 per game.
