Screen Shots is back on THN.com, where we break down hockey topics in a few short paragraphs. As we bid farewell to 2023, we wish all our readers the best in 2024. Let’s jump right in.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are struggling with goaltending, as veteran Ilya Samsonov is struggling with the yips. Journeyman Martin Jones has been good, but the Leafs need a long-term solution. Could a trade with San Jose for Kappo Kahkonen be the answer? A package including Samsonov and a draft pick or prospect could work for both teams. However, Toronto may need to include another NHL-level player to make it happen.
Sidney Crosby’s gift of a framed Pride jersey to Tyson Barrie’s agent is heartwarming. Crosby’s support of underrepresented communities in hockey demonstrates the type of leadership we want to see from our icons.
We also wish the Professional Women’s Hockey League the best of luck as it kicks off its inaugural season on Jan. 1. While sellout crowds for the Canadian teams’ opening games are promising, the real test will be sustaining support throughout the season. We hope fans continue to support the league as it grows in the sports marketplace.
