The Panthers selected Jonathon Brooks as the first running back in the 2024 draft by trading two fifth-round picks to move up six spots in the second round. Despite this, the addition of Brooks does not affect the position of RB Miles Sanders on the team. The team’s new GM, Dan Morgan, emphasized their admiration for Sanders, mentioning his versatility and importance to the offense. Coach Dave Canales also highlighted that all running backs, including Brooks, Sanders, and Chuba Hubbard, will have roles on the team. Sanders had a challenging 2023 season, struggling to perform well, but the team aims to utilize his skills in the upcoming season under Canales’ leadership. Despite trade possibilities, Sanders remains with the Panthers due to his contract terms and recent performance. On the defensive side, the team may consider signing cornerback Stephon Gilmore, with the recent addition of Washington State defender Chau Smith-Wade. The need for another boundary corner alongside Jaycee Horn and Dane Jackson still exists, making Gilmore’s signing likely in the future
Earlier in April, Morgan had mentioned considering signing cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who was with the Panthers in 2021. Morgan planned to reevaluate this after the draft. In the recent draft, only one cornerback was added, Chau Smith-Wade from Washington State in the fifth round. Smith-Wade is expected to play in the slot due to his smaller size. With the absence of Donte Jackson and C.J. Henderson, the Panthers still need a boundary corner to complement Jaycee Horn and newcomer Dane Jackson. Person believes it is likely that the Panthers will eventually bring on Gilmore.
